When he proposed, three and a half years later, on the balcony of a hotel in Lake Maggiore in Italy, I was so excited I forgot to say yes.'It was important for me to have a traditional Hindu wedding otherwise I wouldn’t have felt properly married. I was accompanied to the manavari [the Hindu altar] in a procession including my parents, bridesmaids, female cousins and girl friends. The most significant part came when Vinod placed the thali [a gold talisman] around my neck and we were pronounced man and wife

Indian Wedding Ceremony Outfit

Of course one of the main focal points of any wedding ceremony is the bride’s wedding dress. Traditionally, the Indian bride will wear a heavy and full lengha with bright colors and bold gold jewelry. In America, traditions have merged and we see the Indian bride shifting to a more simple and contemporary style lengha. To keep a good balance of traditional and modern, most brides prefer to stay in the area of a rec wedding lengha, however we have seen beautiful Indian brides that wear a predominantly white or green lengha. Another thing to keep in mind when trying to stick to your roots is that gold is a color that is believe to be associated with good fortune and wealth, so although silver is becoming a more popular highlight color, most Indian brides opt to stay with classic gold, for their wedding outfit anyway.
Lastly, remember that it’s not ALL about your outfit that makes you look great on your wedding day. The bhindis above your eyebrows, your up-do, your ornate jewelry, and your mendhi will all keep you looking like a beautiful traditional bride.

New Designs Wedding dress and Jewels

Do not destroy the ideal marriage costume with the all-too-wrong, all-too-inappropriate jewels lest you find yourself less-than-the-radiant bride on your most significant of days. You have to strike the right balance between the size and shape of the jewels vis-à-vis the color and cut of your marriage gown for that all-too-desired effect. Here is how.Less is more And, girl, is that the truth! You must not at all fall into the tacky trap of over-accessorizing correctly because you want to call concentration to yourself, not to the baling- blinks strung all over you like a rap star with a serious fetish for thick, clunky gold chains and big rocks.

The parents of an American peace activist publicly appealed yesterday for a full investigation into how their son was shot in the head with a high velocity tear gas canister by Israeli security forces.
Tristan Anderson, 38, remains in critical condition after three brain operations at Tel Hashomer hospital in Israel, as a result of the shooting which came at the end of a regular joint Arab-Jewish demonstration against the Israeli separation barrier in the West Bank village of Ni'lin.
Activists say the canister round – with a range of more than 400 metres – was fired directly at Mr Anderson from about 60 metres as he was standing with three or four other activists in the centre of the village. They say he was well away from the barrier where the main protest had taken place earlier on 13 March.

A Punjabi marriage that cannot be: How religion, Partition, and nationality divide the newly weds
By GustavoMustafa - Posted on March 23rd, 2009

My friend, who shall remain anonymous, married a fellow Punjabi whose family origins come from the same city of her nativity, Lahore. Their families speak the same home language and share the same culture, but they are divided along lines of religion and the painful expulsion of Sikhs from Pakistan. My friend's family are not originally Punjabis, they hail from the Indian city of Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh

Asia's intra-regional marriage migration on rise

Bangkok/Phnom Penh - When it comes to attracting a potential spouse, South Korean soap operas seem to be the best way to a South- East Asian bride's heart.
Over the last decade, thousands of Vietnamese and Cambodian women have left their homes to marry South Korean husbands, lured into dubious unions by dreams of financial security and glitzy, city lifestyles in a modern Asian nation.
Cambodia, alarmed by a report that 1,760 Cambodian women had left the country in 2007 for brokered marriages in South Korea, slapped a ban on all marriages to foreigners in April 2008, lifting it only in December after putting in place restrictions on the nuptials trade.
"Korean men have demographic problems in their own country, particularly in finding wives for rural men who are mainly from the lower-income groups," said John McGeoghan, a human-trafficking expert for the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Cambodia.
"In the marketing of this exercise, the Cambodian women are looking at Korean soap operas and thinking they're going to a glamorous life."
It was an IOM report on the exodus of Cambodian brides that sparked Phnom Penh's eight-month foreign marriage ban.
There might be nothing wrong in principle with impoverished women from rural Cambodia or Vietnam choosing to migrate through marriage toSouth Korea, an industrialized, high-tech country with a rapidly greying population and a lack of womenfolk on the farms.
But the Asian foreign brides business has been a source of disillusionment and outright abuses.
"Part of the reason this is an issue is because it's broker arranged, so they come in and two guys might see 100 Vietnamese girls, and they chose the one they like and are encouraged to sleep with the woman that night," said Andrew Bruce, IOM's Bangkok-based regional representative for South-East Asia.
IOM estimates that some 100,000 Vietnamese women have been brokered to Taiwanese husbands over the last decade. There are some 170,000 brides from mainland China in Taiwan, according to government figures, though the real figure may be closer to 270,000, according to non-government estimates.
South Korea, where brokers formerly recruited wives from rural north-east China, has switched to Vietnamese brides, with about 12,000 arriving every year.
It is big business. A broker charges each would-be husband 5,000- 20,000 dollars for a foreign bride, arranging the introductions, marriages, and processing the visa and passport for the newlywed.
"There was a Vietnamese woman who wanted to get out of it, once the husband had left, and she was told she had to pay all the fees, amounting to 6,000 dollars, and of course she had no money," IOM's Bruce said.
In Taiwan, there are stories of Vietnamese "brides" being used as maids by their new mothers-in-law or shared among several brothers as common chattel.
Alarmed by the horror stories, the Taiwan government has tightened up on immigration controls on Vietnamese women, making it more difficult for them to acquire citizenship.
In South Korea, where four in every 10 marriages in rural areas are cross-cultural, the government has commissioned the Women Migrants Human Rights Centre to run 24-hour emergency help lines for foreign brides in six languages.
Divorces among cross-cultural couples in South Korea have increased from 4,171 in 2003 to 11,225 in 2008, one indication that the soap operas might not be painting an accurate picture of rural lifestyles.
In Ho Chi Minh City and Phnom Penh, the IOM has set up orientation programmes for foreign brides awaiting their visas, informing them of their legal rights and providing them with a smattering of cultural and linguistic preparation for their future marriages.
"These women need information about Korea," IOM's McGeoghan said. "They need to know they're not going to be leading glamorous lives, that sometimes in Korean culture they won't be allowed out of the home or get pocket money."
But IOM regional representative Bruce acknowledged that the programme is more damage control than a solution for the abuses inherit in the marriage trade, which is likely to continue as long as poverty is rampant in the countrysides of Cambodia and Vietnam.
As in all marriages, there is both good and bad.
"On the one hand, these women are open to abuse, and they are almost being bought and sold," Bruce said. "But, on the other hand, the women also earn power, because they have an opportunity then to send money home and become far more important in their own families." (dpa)

Sri Lankan Traditional Sari

Sri Lankan religious and cultural traditions feature a second reception after the couple's honeymoon. The family of the groom gives these receptions. It is known as a homecoming, and signifies the bringing back of a bride by the groom. Brides left their homes and joined the groom, a practice still widely held in rural areas and villages. Nowadays, most wedded couples opt to build their own homes, though at times there is a period of living at the groom's home until enough resources are saved for the move into their own homes. Grooms are known to live with their bride's family at times.
As with many similar Asian traditions of culture, Sri Lankan grooms and brides change into different types of dress at the conclusion of the reception. Like in the British tradition, this change of Sri Lankan bridal dress is named the going away dress, which is worn when the wedded couple are about to exit to their Toronto honeymoon. The Sri Lankan bridal dress is much more formal than the western tradition of dress, not unlike the bridal clothing, but can be of different colors and styles. This practice of changing the bridal dress to the going away clothing spans almost all Sri Lankan religions and cultures.
Sri Lankan Traditional Sari
There are four traditional silk saris worn during a Toronto Sri Lankan wedding. The first is worn at the ceremony of thalee, and features red and yellow colors, with a wide border. The second is worn following the marriage ceremony, and is known as Innaik Koorai, which features rose, yellow or muskat colors. The sari worn to the official Toronto ceremony of marriage registration is the third one, and his family pays these three saris on behalf of the groom.
The final Sri Lankan bridal dress sari is paid foe by the bride herself and is worn to the arrival ceremony of the wedding day's wedding stage. The bride's family also pays for a silk set of Salvai and Vesti to present at the wedding stage, for wearing at the marriage registration, which are a shirt and trouser for the groom. The groom presents the silk sari to the bride, as well with further traditional items following the pooja stage of the ceremony. This happens in between the changing of this Sri Lankan bridal dress sari for the ceremony of thalee wearing.
Along with the bride's attire (sari), there also includes a headpiece or veil, accessories such as gloves, under slips and shoes. Further accompaniments include the bridal jewelry and the bridal dressing, which includes makeup and hair. This is repeated for the going away and homecoming ceremonies. The bridesmaids and flower girls also receive wedding Sri Lankan bridal dress saris, along with all the accessories, makeup and hair, and jewelry.

Colors of marriage in Pakistan

Wedding is one of the most important occasions for any girl, and she wants to make it the most outstanding one. And wedding dress is a thing that helps make her wedding a special event. But as happens with all brides, they do not know what is hot and what is not; should they go for traditional or modern dress.
Usually brides settle on traditional heavy work wedding dress because on a very few occasions girls garb themselves in such beautiful and colorful dresses. But brides remember that profiles must be feminine. These days brides love pastel shades and whites for wedding dresses. Many designers combine the look of the modern world and the traditional wedding dress designs. The result is some cool designs which look very Pakistani but show some western influence. These designers select colors like red, rust, maroon in the winters and pink, cream, and gold in the hotter weather in wedding dress. Today brides prefer a contemporary look, a balance of modern with the tradition in their wedding dresses. Yet, there are brides who don’t mind being more colorful or going for the mix and match look. Fashion is creating and destroying at the same time, according to fashion designers so lots of colors keep going and coming in wedding dresses.

Models displaying collections of various designers from India and Pakistan at the Bride & Groom Show in New Delhi on Wednesday.
THE THREE-day Bride and Groom Exhibition that began at Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi on Friday has much to offer for all -- the bride, the groom and their families. Organised by the International Trade and Exhibitions India Private Limited, visitors to the exhibition can not only have a face-to-face interaction with reputed designers and buy their colourful collections, but also choose from a wide assortment of items on display.
Designer Renu Dadlani -- synonymous with her label "Prateeksha" -- is exhibiting her collection "Colour Dreams". "The lehengas are ethnic and traditional. Earlier I used to make them with cotton thread. Now I have given them a contemporary touch by making them with silk threads."
Up for grabs are lehengas with sequences like Swarovski and stones. Each piece requires about two months' time and ten karigars are needed to create it. Renu's work has been accentuated by intricate chikankari.
With friendship replacing hostilities between India and Pakistan, eminent Pakistani designers are also participating.
Unlike Indian designers who excel in chikankari, Pakistanis dressmakers show their unique craftsmanship with zardozi.
Syed Afzaal Ali -- whose label "Lajwanti" is famous not only in Lahore but also in England -- says: "My forte is in zardosi. I am responsible for cuts and motifs while my better half does colour schemes."
In Afzaal's creations -- lehengas, shoes, purses -- lots of traditional work like salma sitara, resham and Western elements like crystals and metal wires have been used. "Both our countries have almost the same culture. I can incorporate some changes in my collection to suit the needs of the Indian market."
Famous Kanpur designer Ragini Singhania is displaying her "Attiraante" collection at the exhibition. "It is a decent opening. I have come out with Italian designs and European colour combinations. My bridal dresses have delicate and sophisticated touch," she says.
Renowned designer Najeeba Zulfiqar is also showcasing her collection.
"My bridal collection is a fusion between Victorian and Morroccan. This is my fifth visit to India and I have a number of high-profile Indian clientele like Shilpa Shetty, Shabana Azmi, Daler Mehendi and Sunidhi Chauhan. Bollywood actress Urmila Matondkar while doing a video with our actress Resham wore a dress designed by me."
According to Najeeba, about ten per cent of the proceeds from the sale of this exhibition would go to her charity "Fatmi Foundation" that works for patients suffering from thalessemia.
From Delhi's bustling Chandni Chowk, the Balujas -- known for their elaborate footwear-- are displaying their shoes and attractive purses. According to Mouj Baluja, "Chandni Chowk has become a wedding hub. The idea is to give the customers an idea of the varieties of shoes we have in our shop. Our shoes are manufactured in leather and synthetic. We have shoes from Hong Kong also. Though our shoes are not for sale as it is difficult to get different sizes, we have both Indian and imported purses on sale.
